Scorn Won’t be the First Game to Support PC DirectStorage After All Say Devs

Microsoft released the DirectStorageAPI for PC earlier in the year. This API will allow developers to stream more efficiently using SSDs and lower CPU overhead. Unfortunately, the technology has not been used by any games yet. Scorn, a PC-exclusive horror game, was recently confirmed by the developers via Twitter that DirectStorage would be available on PC. This would make it the first game to support DirectStorage.

It turns out that this was a false alarm. Scorn’s Twitter page has since removed their confirmation of PC DirectStorage support, and made it clear that the tech was only being used for Xbox.

With the makers of Scorn walking back their claim, Square Enix’s Forspoken is now likely the first game that will make use of DirectStorage on PC. The action-RPG will launch in January 2023.

Scorn won’t support DirectStorage on PC, but the H.R. This Giger-inspired horror game will still be worth your time. Here’s the game’s official description…

“Scorn is an atmospheric first-person horror adventure game set in a nightmarish universe of odd forms and somber tapestry. It is based on the idea of “being thrown in to the world”. You will find yourself isolated and lost within this dream-like environment. You will discover different interconnected regions in an unlinear fashion. This unsettling environment is an entire character in itself. Each location has its own theme, puzzles, and characters that help to create a cohesive world. Throughout the game you will open up new areas, acquire different skill sets, weapons, various items and try to comprehend the sights presented to you.”

  • Cohesive “Lived-In” World Scorn takes place in an open world with many interconnected regions. Each region is a maze like structure with many rooms and paths. All the storytelling happens in-game, with no cut-scenes to distract you from the grisly reality of the living, breathing world you’re in. But keep your eyes open – the game won’t show you any sympathy if you miss something important on your uneasy travels.
  • Full-Body Awareness – Players will experience better immersion being aware of the character’s body and movement. Interaction with other worlds is more realistic. You can pick up objects with your hands instead of floating in midair, and machines and instruments can be controlled by grabbing the controls.
  • Inventory and Ammo Management – Your loadout must be well defined and limited. This plays an important role in keeping the player aware throughout the entire game. Players will need to think about how their actions affect the world and decide when to fight or take cover. Different play styles will be required to advance.

Scorn slithers onto PCs and Xbox Series X/S October 14.
